The above quote was used by Harvard Professor Pinker when explaining why countries in Western Europe and other places are enjoying increased happiness, decreased violence and disease with an overall feeling the world is becoming a better place, but not Americans. The optimistic view comes with not putting extreme political and religious views at the forefront of society. In short, by valuing humanism, not nationalism.
